The reason why President Obama made a plea for "help" from either party is to make a valiant public effort to hide the fact that the Republicans were shut out of "the meetings" by a closed door. This fact has blown up in his face and has hurt his poll numbers. He is attempting to rectify this with a "public outcry" via The state of the Union Address. I, for one, do not believe he has ANY intention of taking into account ANY substantive ideas like real tort reform!

Don't forget Safeway CEO Steven Burd's WSJ op-ed: http://online.wsj.com/article/SB124476804026308603.html The President's idea that there aren't other ideas is like saying there are no alternatives to education besides a giant union-based monopoly. Now, the President might wish that, but it's clearly not true.

Would have been entertaining (although I'm sure it violates some rule of the decorum) if Rep Ryan had raised his hand at that point, stood up, and delivered to the President the GOP alternative, A Road Map for America's Future, that he wrote about in the WSJ. There's no way the President could keep on saying that the Republicans have no ideas.
