    Carter Redux

The parallels between the first years in office of Barack Obama and Jimmy Carter are striking, according to James Carafano of the Heritage Foundation. Like Obama, Carter followed an unpopular president. Carter's Year One was invested in diplomacy and image-making.

His energy was dedicated almost exclusively to "making nice" on the world stage. It's what drove his actions in the Israeli-Egyptian peace process, at strategic-arms limitation talks and in negotiating the Panama Canal Treaty.

It was a perpetual exercise in "soft power."

A poor economy led Carter to scale down our military presence in the world. Year Two brought threats from around the world.

A Soviet-backed coup in Afghanistan paved the way for Moscow's future invasion of the country. Demonstrations against the shah wracked the Iranian regime, paving the way for revolution and the rise of the ayatollahs. Trouble erupted across Africa, from Somalia to Zaire and Zambia, some of it inspired by Soviet meddling...

America's enemies had taken measure of the man during his first, change-filled year in office. They saw weaknesses they could exploit. In the second year, they made their move.

As Year One ends for President Obama, he faces increasing belligerence from Russia, Iran, and North Korea. Al Qaeda-related attacks increase. Obama's charm offensive with our enemies doesn't seem too be working well so far.

Obama has the lens of history for guidance. Perhaps the President will consider the experience of his fellow Nobel Peace Prize winner.

Another similarity could occur when Repubs take back seats in 2010, forcing Obama to move to the right, giving him cover from the relentless far left. Like Clinton, he could enjoy receiving most of the credit for lifting the economy due to a more moderate approach such as creating incentives for small business and cutting or limiting govt. spending. The bad part is people would credit Obama for republican ideas and their results, leading to electing Democrats in the future.

As with many sequels, the current one is abysmal. But then, the original production directed by J.C. was better only in that it's over.

Carter was soft which turned out to be a real problem for the USA, but Obama is nothing more than a speech with no content. Appointments of tax evaders, failure to show transparency, placing appointies that have never worked a day in charge of huge corporations, and so on. Our military is hampered by politicians no different then Viet Nam! Court rulings that favor the few over the many. Our government is nothing short of a joke and needs a major house cleaning. Do't vote for any incumbents!

It takes a Carter to get a Reagan!

Well, here is another similarity for you. Carter increased the amount of U.S. Dollars in print by 13% over a 2 year period. Anyone who lived during that time beyond teen years can tell you how horrible the economy was by that increase alone. Obviously, other factors contributed, but increasing that alone "will" have a huge impact on the economy. President Obama has increased the amount of U.S Dollars by 100% since taking office. It is still going up. That is some scary stuff.

All of these negative comments regarding 'the mesiah' are being collected by the newly appointed thought czar and appropriate action will be taken by same.

Maybe we were very upset with Republicans in 76 after the Watergate fiasco, and said "OK, we'll try the Democrats", and got Carter...from the looks of things, 2012 should be a repeat of 80. I HOPE!!!

I think 'matt' needs to be silenced. If you don't like the truth, go check out CNN since they seem to be so popular. Oh wait. They now have the lowest ratings due to ... wait for it... being silenced themselves.

I think it is interesting that Jimmy Carter calls anyone a racist, he got elected Governor of GA. by running a race hate campaign...how soon we forget. It is a matter of public record oh incidentally, he would not even go to the MLK funeral, huh!!

Obama will make Carter look like Regan.

So Matt you don't support Freedom of Speech? Obama will go down in history as the worst president in history! His stimulus is a joke, his health care reform is a joke, his breaking of the constitution to give GM and Chrysler to the union is a joke. You wan't to turn this country around, GIVE THE MONEY BACK TO THE PEOPLE THAT EARNED IT, not the deadbeat moochers.

So much for freedom of expression huh Matt??? You're probably not in favor of that silly paper called the Constitution either. Hey, if people don't believe the same as you, just SILENCE THEM!!! That's the communist, er, I mean, American way.

Fox and Talk Radio need to be silenced.

Anyone who was paying attention before the election knew that obama is Jimmy Carter, Jr. He got away with portraying McCain as Bush, III, and it worked for them, too bad for the rest of us.

Careful, you will make the White House Enemy list with any truthful comment negative towards Obama!

History continues to repeat itself, it's the one constant. Our strongest President's always are followed by our weakest.Nixon-Carter,Bush-Obama. Say what you like about Nixon or Bush, but foreign policy was never in doubt. We may not have been the most beloved country, but our strength was never questioned, nor our safety.

I think John meant "increasing belligerence from Russia, Iran, and _NORTH_ Korea"

Well said. I hope this message gets out to administration. Of course they don't seem to like suggestions!
